Updating the Status of a Non-Local Prescription

This topic is only applicable to provinces with EHR integration. Select the applicable tab for your province to learn more.

The Update Status button on the Rx Authorizations Profile - Detailed Prescription view can be used to change the status of a non-local prescription.

If a prescription is found locally and on the EHR, update the status from the Patient Profile tab in Propel Rx. Prescription status changes from the Patient Profile are transmitted to the EHR but not vice versa. However, any mismatches can be resolved by performing an EHR Profile Compare.

Prescriptions that are discontinued or revoked cannot have their status changed; the EHR will reject the status change with a response like the one below. If a prescription was accidentally discontinued or revoked and it needs to be filled, refill it and create a new prescription on the EHR.

To update the status of a non-local prescription on the EHR Profile:

  1. Open the Rx Authorizations Profile Summary view.

  2. From the Prescription Information section, select the applicable prescription that requires a status update.

  3. Select Detail. The Detailed Prescription view opens.

  4. Select Update Status. The Update Status window opens.

  5. From the Status dropdown, select either Revoke or Obsolete (Discontinue) and choose the appropriate reason from the Reason dropdown.

  6. To add MMI and CS codes:

    1. Select the expander button .

    2. Dropdown the appropriate MMI header.

    3. Double-click on the appropriate CS code or select the CS code and select the >> button.

    4. Repeat steps b - c to add additional CS codes, up to a maximum of 7 if needed.

    5. Select OK.

  7. Select OK to update the prescription’s status on the EHR.

The status update will reflect immediately in the Rx Authorizations Profile Detailed Prescription view. However, the Rx Authorizations Profile Summary view will continue to show the former status until it is refreshed (i.e., closed and then reopened).

The status of a prescription that is on the EHR but not on the local Propel Rx system can be changed. The following options are available when changing the status of a non-local prescription:

  • Abort (Discontinue)

  • Revoke

  • Suspend

  • Resume

To update the status of a non-local prescription:

  1. Open the Patient Folder.

  2. Select the Profile tab.

  3. Select Rx > Profile > EHR-All. The EHR-All window opens.

  4. Highlight the non-local prescription. The Local checkbox should be unchecked.

  5. Select the Detail button. The Details window opens.

  6. Select the Update Status button. The Update Status window opens.

The Update Status button is also available for local prescriptions. However, whenever possible, update the status of a local prescription from the Patient Profile. This helps prevent mismatches in prescription status between Propel Rx and the EHR.

  7. From the Status dropdown list, select the status you wish to update the prescription to.

  8. From the Reason dropdown list, select the reason for changing the prescription status.

  9. Enter any notes if needed.

  10. Select OK.

  11. Select OK to close the Details window. The status change is transmitted to the EHR.
